Internet Predators - Who is keeping an Eye on the Child?
Internet Predators - Who is keeping an Eye on the Child
?
Eye on the Child must be viewed as an ambiguous heading. There the eyes of protection parents and the eyes of skullduggery predators.
So sad that our children must pay the price for technological evolution. Remember how our parents when speaking to each would ask, "do you know where the children are?" Today that question comes with a twist: "do you know where the children are and who are they chatting with online? Who is stalking or harassing or abusing our children online?"
The internet is an amazing source of information and learning aid but it is infested with dangers, inappropriate content and sick, vindictive predators. Parents need, nowadays, to employ a full-time guard to watch over their children whilst they are on the net. No, I am not suggesting that the parents need to spy on children but they need to be aware of the sites children visit and, more especially, who they talk to in chat-rooms. The internet has not only become our primary source for reference material, but also the place where we connect and communicate with many of our friends. Parents need to teach children about the dangers of the internet, in fact many parents need to learn about the dangers too, since many have not had enough exposure to cyber technology to be aware of the threats lurking out there. Parents need to surf the web, go to chat-rooms and join social media sites to familiarize themselves with some of the unsavoury characters and content, for their own safety as well as that of the children. Some sites will ask for very personal details in order to access them and it is through accessing those details that predators will strike.
Although there are many programmes one can install to safeguard against some of the dangers, it is also of paramount importance that there is an open channel of communication between parent and child. The child should have the confidence to speak out when they encounter an irregularity on the net and receive the support of the parent not be made to feel like they are the perpetrator. Parents, remember the child is the victim. The internet has become such an integral part of our lives that it is impossible not to use it.
There are in excess of 5,000,000 Internet pedophiles online at any given time. More than 25% of children online have been exposed to pornographic content. Less than 25% of children who have been exposed to sexual harassment tell their parents. More than 75% of children will exchange personal and family details for goods, prizes or gifts.
Now the really frightening and sick statistics show that nearly 80% of targets for online predators are children 14 years of age and older. More than 20% are children between the ages of 10 and 13 years.
Since a nom-de-plume can be used to enter chat-rooms, there is a 50% chance of engaging in conversation with a pedophile posing as a child.
