Internet Radio In Your Car

Internet Radio In Your Car

Internet Radio In Your Car

Music and audio have always been the natural form of entertainment in cars.

This started with installing AM radios to cars as early as 1930. Casette players, CD-s and CD chargers followed during the century, all controlled from the radio console, and later through steering wheel buttons for convenience and safety. iPods with music and podcast and compressed audio (for instance mp3, wma and others) also became possible to connect and control in the same way.

The choice of music expanded from a few radio stations to a few thousand songs stored on a small device to be available through the car radio.

So it seems like car audio entertainment is fixed once and for all, doesn't it?

Well, not yet

Thousands available anywhere

From the entertainment segment of the internet, happily grew a new form of audio (and also video as a matter of fact) distribution: broadcasting over the internet in a live stream, to which someone can hop on, listen in and hop off. Now wait a minute! This is actually radio just comes through the computer!' one would say, and one would be absolutely right. This is precisely the reason for calling such audio broadcasts internet radio stations or web radio stations. The big deal comes from their number and their broadcast area.

Internet radio stations are available in thousands, starting one is simple, costs are minimal, frequency limitations do not exist, programming can be specific for reaching niche-s worldwide.

The best thing: they can be received practically at any point on Earth with an acceptable internet connection. And that means any point. A radio station from Hungary becomes the same to listen within the neighborhood or in Tokyoor in Buenos Airesor in Kuala Lumpuror the other way round.

The Internet gets into the car radio

Internet radio is a new form of audio entertainment. But how can that get into a car radio? There is no modem or socket to plug an internet cable in, anderthere is no internet cable to plug in either. And we miss a keyboard, and a proper screen. There is no way to make that happen.

Luckily, there is a way, and without changing anything on the car radio. A small bit of technology can substitute all of these, so small a bit that it fits to a dongle no bigger than a car key. It is called the Dension Webradio.

Let's start with the internet cable. Actually you can use a 3G mobile phone as a modem, and have a Bluetooth connection for with the Dension Webradio at the other end. If your preference is a 3G USB modem, you can simply plug it in the Dension in car Webradio to Dension Webradio FM. The Webradio then directly connects to the USB music port of the car radio.

The connection seems easy, but how about selecting the stations. The car radio has no mouse and keypad for browsing internet radio stations. It has buttons to select music easily in the car.

And these are precisely the buttons to use for selecting the internet radio stations.

The simpler the better

Handling several hundred thousand radio stations is indeed difficult, even with a full keyboard and screen. Human nature comes to help out: actually nobody would reasonably want all those thousands of channels. The individual choice is just a few: the exquisitely selected personal favourites. So let's do a pre-selection on a computer and keep the list on the web for easy availability and modification. The Dension Webradio can then access this list and offer the pre-selected stations only.

Running through the pre-selection is possible with the radio screen and buttons designed to select music from a USB storage and it looks and feels exactly the same as selecting one of those mp3-s.

Therefore a small bit of technology is not more than a 3G phone and the small Dension Webradio or Webradio FM plugging the Internet radio stations to the car audio.

And it all packs up to a single item: Webradio on Board!
