The World Wide Web offers a plethora of information on everything under the sun

For general information services, Google is the web search engine mostly used by web denizens. It offers language translation services as well as different options to customize your search. Google has a PageRank system, which utilizes algorithm in determining which websites appear on top of the list of search results. This system prevents sites that use spamming from appearing at the top of the page. Aside form websites, Google also includes other file types like Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and plain text files in their results.

Yahoo! Search is another popular search engine, and is ranked 2nd query volume. Yahoo! utilizes SearchScan, which alerted users of websites with possible viruses, spam and spyware. Yahoo! started out as a directory to various websites before it became a search engine during the 1990s. Using all the search engine companies it acquired, Yahoo! created its own search engine using the web crawler system, which browses the web for results matching the user's query. Starting 2009, Yahoo! Search is powered by its competitor Bing, which is owned by Microsoft.

Ask.com, formerly known as Ask Jeeves, started out as a website where people received answers for questions they posted, combined with basic keyword searching. In 2006, it became a full-blown search engine, and the character Jeeves was phased out. Ask.com has a "Binoculars Site Preview" function which allows users to glimpse a sneak peak of a website by placing the cursor over the result to get a pop-up screenshot. Ask.com also has an installable toolbar, where users can search for sites direct from their internet browser toolbar.

Bing is a search engine developed by Microsoft using the web-crawler system. Search results are broken down into sections, where each result includes a sub-link, which shows other links located within the site itself. It also features a navigation pane, where users can track previous and related searches, and glimpse a preview of each site in the search result, as well as links inside the site. The site also has a video thumbnail preview feature, where users can mouse-over video results to play the video. Bing also caters to specific searches like sports, finance, and even mathematical information. If asked, Bing can display scores from games, complete with team and player statistics. It can also display stock quotes when users key in a company's stock symbol, as well as generate mathematical computations when users type in mathematical equations on the search box.

Though there many search engines throughout the web, Google, Yahoo!, Ask.com and Bing are your best bets at finding exactly what you're searching for, with their extensive archives, plus a myriad of advanced features, they make internet surfing safer and simpler, to make sure you don't get lost amid the confusing roads and byways of the world wide web.
