Interview Candidates Need To Demonstrate Poise And Confidence Regardless Of The Economic Climate

In its latest report on the state of recruitment in the UK the Recruitment and Employment

Confederation confirms that the number of permanent full-time placements in February 2012 showed an increase for the second in a row.

The figures also reached their highest level since May 2012 and the increasing pace of overall demand for staff was also at its highest in four months. The figures for available candidates for jobs also rose in February.

The REC's member recruitment agencies were also asked about the trends in pay and agencies reported back that permanent staff salaries had dropped during February for the first time since October 2009 while temp staff pay rates had risen at their fastest pace in four months.

The main problem with regular updates on figures in many fields is in the interpretation of trends and the reaction to the figures stated above has been one of cautious optimism about a possible slight recovery for the UK economy.

Kevin Green, REC CHief Executive, is quoted as seeing the result as the labour market clearly and showing the strongest performance on permanent placements for nine months.

However, with other indicators suggesting a volatile year for the growth of the UK economy in 2012 and a possibility that unemployment will continue to rise, it is difficult for any candidate looking for work to maintain the positive outlook that they need to demonstrate while job hunting or at an interview.

Many positions, particularly service and administrative ones like secretarial, PA and EA, require people to have a degree of self confidence and skill in interacting with all kinds of people, both senior colleagues in the workplace and clients with whom they may have to deal.

To be selected for interview in the first place requires the candidate to have a polished CV demonstrating the right qualifications and skills, and if they have been put forward for a position by a recruitment agency, the agency is likely to have made sure that the information is correct and presented properly.

Once the candidate has reached the interview stage they will have to be able to demonstrate their suitability for themselves and this will mean not only being able to answer some challenging questions while remaining calm and confident, but also demonstrating the appropriate level of self confidence in their presentation.

Operating against the uncertain background of a barrage of figures and trends being reported and commentated on in the news media this may be a challenge and it may be useful for a candidate to practice getting the tone right before they face the actual interview.
