Research: Before you go on an interview, you want to do a good amount of research. Research the company you are interviewing with, the industry the company operates in, and research the job you are applying for. You could also go one step further by researching the people you are meeting with by searching their names on the internet to see what information you can find. This will enable you to give off the best impression.
Build a list of questions to ask: Asking questions during an interview is very important. Not only will this help you get the information that you need to determine if this is the job that you want, but the questions you ask will also communicate make you give a good impression to the interviewer. Be ready for your interview by building a list of questions that can be asked.
Prepare for questions that they will ask you: Brainstorm a list of questions that you anticipate being asked. Compose your answers and then share them with someone else for their opinion. There could be chance that an answer you think sounds good may need to be tweaked to give the best impression. Finalize and practice your answers.
Write a business plan: Write a plan outlining what you will in your first 30, 60, and 90 days if you are given the position that you are interviewing for.
Dress: Dress your best. This can mean different things for different work environments. But one guideline that should help is it is better to overdress than to be underdressed.
What to bring: Bring a professional notebook or folder. Arrival: Plan to arrive thirty minutes prior to the scheduled interview time. This is to allow for any unexpected challenges while traveling to the location. Check-in or actually enter the interview location at fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled time.
Body language: Body language that you want to hold throughout the interview is good posture, good facial expression, and good eye contact.
Asking Questions: Toward the end of the interview they will ask you if you have any questions. At this point, pull out your questions but before you ask any, ask them how much time you have left with them so that you are courteous to their schedule and also so you know which questions to scratch from the list.
Qualify them also: Most interviews are 100% the company qualifying the interviewee to see if they are the right fit for the company. Just as they are qualifying you, you should also be qualifying them to see if they are the right company for you to work for also.
Give positive impression: Give the interviewer with the impression that the job you are interviewing for is something that you want to do for a long time and are passionate about. And that you would like to stay with the company and progress into to management at some point. This will help you to appear as someone that is loyal and will be committed to the company long-term. You also want to appear trainable, driven, dependable, works well with others, easy to manage, etc.
Trial Close: An interview is like a sales call. And at the end of every sales call a good sales person will try to close the deal. Trial close to identify not only to see where you stand, but to also show how that you are very interested in the position and assertive when it comes to pursuing something that you want.
Interviewing tips after the interview
Thank you: Send a follow-up email to everybody that you met with. This message should thank them for their time, state your interest in the position, and list a couple of points why you are the right person for the job.
Follow up: Call or email the person you interviewed with a week after the interview to inquire about their progress in making a decision.
