Intervista A Thomas Prescher
Our project of "interactive interview" began with the independent watchmaker
Thomas Prescher and had a positive outcome so that just Thomas was enthusiastic
about the first questions posed to him, he asked us to continue with other
questions, reserving its total availability 'in spite of themselves preparing
for the important event in the meantime Moscow Watch Expo 2011.
With me, the questions this time have participated in the forum " Coffee and
Tourbillo2 ". For the uninitiated, this is a curiosity 'of Thomas Prescher . He
is one of the few watchmakers in the world that will say yes if you want to
create your own clock ... yes, a piece in the world, the ambition of every
collector! It can start, as with the now called Desiderata "Choose your
Movement" - choose your movement ), a vintage Caliber already own by helping
you materialize your dream, putting your hands in his art as a happening a
watchmaker's shop to over one hundred years ago.
That said here are our questions:
Coffee - 1st Question: "Can you tell us how you organized the Maison and how
many staff you have? Question 1b: What equipment and tools used to make
"unique"?
Thomas Prescher first : The company currently consists of my wife and me. The
office is at home. Here we carry out most of the paperwork, communication,
photos, graphics, movies and planning, without forgetting the creative aspects
of development, CAD, and programming of CNC machines. A Twann has instead based
our laboratory / workshop.
The laboratory is my kingdom. That's the place where the clocks are physically
constructed. Every so often I get requests here. If the job gets too high, from
time to time I take watchmakers are underway to become teachers. Normally,
before leaving to follow their horizons, we stop two or three years.
My fleet consists of a five-axis milling machine, a drill, an oven 30 to 2,000
C, a cleaning machine, a galvanic treatment machine, a machine for polishing
and different systems to test the water resistance of a case, the frequency and
so on. Last but not least, a box with a window of two holes that I need to
lacquer dials and a small machine to print numbers and logos.
This is everything I need with a huge collection of tweezers, screwdrivers,
pins ...
Thomas Prescher 1b : I never counted how many tools I own. Of course, I own a
lot whether large or small, and occasionally a watchmaker needs to build new
support for such a small item. In that case you need to build quickly and at
home. In general I've mentioned before that I use all the tools.
To build the items we buy raw metal into sheets or bars. From these plates we
get all the parts. Mostly, she proceeds with our five-axis milling machine, or
use the lathe.
Get an item from a raw machine requires several minutes to several hours or so.
Instead, finish each can take anywhere from hours to days.
Michael .. - Question 2: Thomas, you realize in a few pieces or even watches to
measure deeply involving the customer in your craftsmanship. How would you
describe the client is now looking for all this?
TP : My clients are mostly people who love art. Not everyone is a collector of
watches, but all love beautiful things. Most of them have passed the stage to
express themselves by buying mass brands to show their logo well known. They
know how to ask people who know what is the right choice for them to do -
themselves!
They all have in common the fact that art experts and have a strong
personality. They know that wearing it to express their unique character.
Demonstrate that they have sophisticated tastes, knowledge and a kind of
hedonism, in positive terms: "I only accept a product if someone in doing so
has given the best of himself."
Tourbillo2 - Question 3: When you create a watch, what are the criteria that
you would never have to give up?
TP : At the end of all our customers want to see a high quality. All insist on
receiving a work of art that the end can be easily identified as such. For them
it is important to own a part of my creativity, that I grant them with
pleasure.
I perceive my work as a creative art and it is my responsibility to initiate a
process to drive fancy which there are also my customers, who are looking at
how it could be in reality the watch of their dreams. Quite often my clients
end up owning more than one of my single clock because these processes have
generated many ideas that need to happen in a watch.
This collaboration can begin a process in which our desire as a customer who
wants to have a movement has a new look. But the work could increase
significantly if a customer wants to be - according to his will - an entire
clock.
