Introduction On Hukou Waterfall Of China

Hukou Waterfall is the second largest waterfall in China

, located at the intersection of Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province.

It is east to Linfen City in Shanxi Province and west to Yichuan County of Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province. The time driving from Taiyuan to Hukou is 5 to 6 hours, and from Xian is about 2 hours.

The mighty Yellow River, the second largest river in China, surges its way from Qinghai Province to the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi Provinces where it suddenly runs its way through a narrow valley, blocked in by rocks on the two sides. The riverbed abruptly narrows down from 300 meters to 50 meters, turning the placid water into rapids.

The tremendous weight of water splashes onto the rocks, forming a magnificent waterfall, 15 meters high and 20 meters wide, as if the water is pouring down from a huge teapot, hence the name Hukou(mouth of teapot). The scene can be overwhelming, water stirring up masses of smoke and cloud, colors turning from yellow to grey, grey to blue. The locals call this awesome scenery smoke from the river.

In winter, the ice will be formed by overflow water column. As the thrill water climbing upside and down the cliff, the rainbow appears, at the meantime, colorful and shining light against the background. Visitors invariably lament the magic sight.

Best viewing period of Hukou Waterfall

As the difference between seasonal climate and water, the landscape has changed from time to time. First period from April to May, in the spring time the mountains and plains of the peach blossoms, and frozen shore ice on the cliffs is becoming ablating. On the second period, from September to November, after the rainy season, the river is flocked by a number of springs and streams, hence often rainbow appears.
