Introduction To Control Room Design
You have probably landed on this page because of one of several reasons; maybe you
are trying to learn about display systems or you are in charge of purchasing components for and coming up with a functional control room design. If you are frantic because the only control room you can think of is NASAs space control center, dont fret. That is what most people think of. During the early stages of space exploration, when everyone was caught up in the excitement of the time, NASAs control room is what gave us a window into the vast adventure of space.
Today, these types of rooms and the technology that governs them are used in a huge array of applications across many industries. Broadcasters use these systems to control many different incoming and outgoing feeds, call centers use them to track communications, and utilities use a good control room design to manage the transmission, distribution and generation of water, gas and power. Even though the technology has changed over the years, the control room is still just as important and is still the operations center of these industries.
There can be many different components of a control room, but they all have the same basic ones in common. These include the observation room, the display control system/video wall controller, and the video walls. The observation room is usually used in the larger control center designs. The display control system and video wall controller is the hardware and software that manages various feeds to display them on the video wall. Those video walls display high resolution data and graphic applications, large maps, SCADA applications, videos and schematics with screens and projectors.
When you are choosing the components to fill out your control room design, there are many different things you need to consider. This includes the reliability and quality of all of your components and the level of support that is going to be provided to you and your staff by the vendor. You need equipment that has been proven to be reliable and consistent, there should be built-in redundancy features to reduce down time, the equipment has to be easy to use, there has to be fast responses to failure correction, and you must get support and service from the manufacturer. Be sure that you take the time needed to appropriately research all of your options and weigh the features and costs of your control room design against your needs and preferences for your business, and make sure you will be set for years to come in the future with the equipment you choose.
