Introduction to fraction sample problems:

A fraction is a number that can represent part of a whole. There are two parts in a fraction, a numerator and a denominator. For instance, 5/6 represents a fraction. Here, 5 is called as numerator and 6 is called as denominator.

Types of fractions

There are three types of fractions as follows,

Proper fraction numerator in smaller than the denominator

Improper fraction numerator is bigger than the denominator

Mixed fraction consists of a whole number and a proper fraction

Sample Problems for Adding Fractions

Sample problem 1

Add '1/5' and '2/5'

Solution

The problem is to add '1/5' and '2/5'

Here the denominators are same (the numbers under the fraction bar), we can add them together by simply adding the numerators (the 1 and 2 = 3), while keeping the same denominator (the 5.

So, the answer is '3/5'

Sample problem 2

Add '1/5' and '2/3'

Solution

Here the problem is to add '1/5' and '2/3'

Here the denominators are different (lower numbers), so we must first find a common denominator of the two fractions, before adding them together.

For the denominators here, the 5 and 3, a common denominator for both is 15.

With the common denominator, '1/5' becomes '3/15' and '2/3' becomes '10/15'

So now our addition problem becomes, '3/15' + '10/15'

As the denominators of the fractions are same (the numbers under the fraction bar), we can add them together by simply adding the numerators (the 3 and 10 = 13), while keeping the same denominator (the 15).

Our answer here is '13/15'

Sample Problems to Convert Fractions

Sample problem 1

Convert the improper fraction '5/2' into a mixed number.

Solution

To convert '5/2' to a mixed number

First, divide the numerator (the 5) by the denominator (the 2). This will give

you 2, with a remainder of 1.

The mixed number can be created by using the 2 as the whole number, the 1 as the numerator

and the 2 as the denominator.

So, '5/2' as a mixed number is 2 '1/2'

Sample problem 2

Convert 5 '5/7' into an improper fraction.

solution

To convert 5 '5/7' to an improper fraction, multiply the 7 (the denominator), and the 5 (the whole number). To this product, add the 5 (the numerator)

giving 40, to form the new numerator, and use the 7 as the new denominator.

So, 5 '5/7' as an improper fraction is '40/7'
