. Being the county seat of Johns County, it has a fair amount of attention. Of course being in the sunshine state also makes it an interesting stopover for both domestic tourists and those that come from across the pond. In its history there is a Spanish foundation and it is one of the oldest European settlements in the United States of America. The region where it lies is known as the First Cost. The population of the city was estimated at over eleven thousand people in 2004 but it has been growing steady. The town is the location for the headquarters of the Florida National Guard.
