Inuit Art And Its History:

The creation of Inuit art work started in the early 1940s

. The Inuit people or Eskimos as are referred are primarily hunters. However, in their struggle for sustenance and survival they took to carving. The artifacts that they created were mainly made of ivory. According to the Inuit culture, the art that the people created had to be carried with them where ever they went. With time and influence of the other societies the traditional carving practices of the Inuits underwent a change. The material used for carving was not restricted to ivory. The influence of southern Canadian markets which used stones like argillite, serpentinite and soapstone gradually began to be seen in Inuit art as well. Today a wide variety and millions of Inuit artifacts are being created in these soft stones.

In the early 16th century, the Eskimos created attractive Inuit art tools such as animal carvings, shamanic outlets, camping and hunting scenes which became popular and began to be traded among the communities. The Eskimos also used ivory to produce goods for decorating items such as the musical instruments, tools, rifles and boats. Hence, carved goods like miniature figures and walrus tusks became famous in Canada and there, in other parts of the world too.

Eskimo Art began to flourish in the 16th century and became a trademark commodity of Canada. Today, the beauty and uniqueness of the art is famous worldwide. The Inuit Art defines the way of life of Eskimos and their proximity with nature. For them their art is not creativity but an expression of the reality.

At present, the Inuit art market is divided mainly into the domestic market comprising Canada and US and the international market. The demand for these artifacts is high throughout the world and their display is no more restricted to exhibitions and museums. Inuit art can be found in peoples living rooms as well. Art of all kinds has found growing enthusiasts around the world. Given this fact, the Inuit art is one of the fastest growing art forms around the world. More and more people are taking keen interest in the rich and vast ancient art and collectibles are being gathered from various sources. The fact that the original Inuit people lived off the main land and created their utensils and weapons from natural elements like stone, bone and animal hides has added the interest of art enthusiasts around the world.
