Inventions That Shouldnt Have Been And Karate

Speaking of Karate, there was a fellow, back in 1899

, who quit employment with the patent office. The reason he gave for quitting? Because everything and anything that could be invented had been invented, and there was nothing more that could be invented.

Do you understand his thought process? There was nothing knew to be thought of, designed or built. We had reached the peak of all mankind! No more ideas to be had!

We had designed printing presses and built horseless carriages. We had created machines to weave and figured out ways to bottle coca cola. What more could man possibly invent, or even desire to create?

This, on the edge of building assembly lines and 100 MPH cars for everybody. This just before that fantastic winged thing got off the ground at Kitty Hawk, and turned into spaceships and landed on the moon. Oh, and dont let me forget, there was this unimportant thing which somebody figured out called a computer.

So I love it when I run into one of these hard core, do or die fellows who say that an art must be done exactly as they have always been done, and the design cannot be improved. The Martial Arts, you see, in their humble opinion, has reached the absolute summit of martial arts possibility, and there is nothing more anybody could ever figure out. Why, were at the top, you see, and there is nothing left for us to do but look down.

I guess thats why Im such a total disgrace, and why classical martial artists sometimes curl a lip in my direction, and why this Matrix thing is just a gimcrack with no substance. I didnt terminate my employment, you see. Im still pushing, I think that new martial arts are on the rise.

In the case of Karate, there are only three things to be focused on: grounding the weight, using the body as one unit, and creating space for the explosion. This is the algebra of that fighting style, and the crux of its motion. After that there is the potential for motions, and this is where the endless art takes wings and heads for the horizon. How many endless lists of attacks and secondary attacks and counters andlocks and pressure points and hand configurations and energy potentials and so on can you create?

This is where Matrixing takes place, and this is where real Karate starts to rise. The place where most arts stop is where the true analysis of that fabulous combat art takes form and starts to lift off. Unless, of course, you believe that everything that could be invented has been invented, and there is nothing left to do but look down.
