Invest In A Bariatric Wheelchair That Will Last
It is a current sad truth in the world and especially in the United States that one of the biggest medical problems facing people is that of obesity
. Among the health care costs incurred through this affliction, all often overlook the need for a sturdy and long-lasting bariatric wheelchair.
Super-morbid obesity is on the rise as well and can be especially debilitating, not only for the sufferer, but for the institutions working to help them as well. It's difficult for the people on the retail floor trying to serve their clients while keeping costs down at the same time.
There are several problems with the most common bariatric wheelchairs used by institutions at present. The first, of course, is that most of these chairs have a maximum weight capacity of 800 pounds or fewer. Unfortunately, with the super-morbidly obese, this is often insufficient, leading to product breakdown.
A capacity of up to 1000 pounds is far more effective for all parties concerned and also can avoid essentially testing a standard chair to destruction by using it to its maximum weight capacity on a daily basis.
Such a discrepancy in what a bariatric wheelchair can hold versus what it needs to hold tends toward staff breakdown as well as product. A greater number of attendants will be required to transport a patient who cannot be moved using a wheelchair, thus tying up desperately needed staff.
There are also space considerations of pushing a bed or gurney through a hall, into an elevator or exam or testing room, some of which may necessitate transfer from one mode of transport to another, again sapping time and resources, not to mention possible injury to staff or patient that is risked with multiple moves.
Other amenities that standard bariatric wheelchair often lack are easily retractable arms for patient transfer. A feature like that again will reduce risk to patient and attendants, as well as potentially reducing the number of staff required to move a client from one locale to another.
While a less useful chair might seem to be more cost effective, simply having a lower price doesn't mean that it will not cost later on. Any prevention of staff or patient strain and savings on transport time - man-hours in accounting parlance - need to be figured into the total cost of an item.
There are other ways that the right bariatric wheelchair can save a hospital money above and beyond the apparent cost differential from buying a cheaper product. Standard chairs may not be able to move a patient from one locale to another and require transport options, which take up more space, blocking hallways, elevators, and labs. These chairs also occupy a great deal of space all by themselves.
When everything is increasingly at a premium, a series of chairs that can be nested upon each other like shopping carts have numerous advantages. The most obvious is that they can all be placed in a standard spot on each floor, leading to rapid location in an emergency and are unlikely to have been stuffed into a broom closet because there was nowhere else to put them. And this is only one of many advantages to such a chair.
