is always good to know facts about IP addresses as they will aid you when you are troubleshooting broadband related problems.

A simple definition of IP addresses -

Every computer connected to the Internet will have a unique identifying number known as an IP address. IP stands for Internet Protocol; it is a set of numbers that are assigned to devices included in a computer network. IP addresses are stored as binary numbers are displayed in a numerical form to make them readable. There are four different IP Address Classes -

Class A addresses are for large networks.


Class B addresses is for medium-sized networks.

Class C addresses are for small networks.

Class D addresses are multicast address.

Here is an overview on the IP Address 192.168.2.1 -

All computers contain IP addresses which are used by networks or servers to identify them. 192.168.2.1 is a Class C private IPv4 network address for routers, access points or other network devices manufactured by the brands Belkin, SMC and other manufacturers. This IP address is in the range private IPv4 addresses with the first two octets as 192.168. Any brand of network router, or any computer on a local network for that matter, can be set to use 192.168.2.1. SMC and Belkin routers are likely to have 192.168.2.1 as the default IP address. The settings in 192.168.2.1 can be used to alter passwords and usernames. All you need to do is go to the homepage and enter the default password. After this has been entered you can change the username and password accordingly. If you have forgotten the password you can press the reset button to take care of this problem.

IP addresses can be used numerous times over and over again, but on the different networks. Private IP addresses are non routable, hence if the same private IP address exists on a similar network then it will lead to IP address conflict and interrupt the working of the Internet. There are some IP addresses within IPv4 that will are private such as 192.168.2.1, these are usually used by companies. 192.168.2.1 is not only limited to regular networks but also happens to be an essential element in broadband routers.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of IP addresses for private networks:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)

172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)
