Xavier Jones was saved by his coachs quick thinking and the coachs iPhone

. Jones, a La Verne Lutheran School basketball star in California, owes his life to his 2 coaches and an iPhone app,. According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, Coach Eric Cooper downloaded iPhone app Phone Aid, which taught him how to perform CPR. The very next day, Coach Cooper used this knowledge to save his student, Xavier Jones, when Jones collapsed during practice. Coaches Eric Cooper Sr., and John Osorno were able to keep Jones breathing until the paramedics arrived.

It was really fresh and clear in my brain, Cooper said of the life-saving technique. We are trained in CPR, but the iPhone app was a stabilizer for us.

Xavier was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hardening of the heart muscle. This is the same ailment that previously killed Loyola Marymount basketball player Hank Gathers during the 1990 college basketball season. Jones was set to play basketball at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point next year. Its not certain that he will be unable to play now with this diagnosis, but after Hank Gathers died while playing with the same affliction, it is unlikely that any team will want to take on the liability.

Phone Aid is something you may want to download. Phone Aid, from Entanke, is a reference application that gives you quick real information on what to do in case of a first aid emergency. It has 5 different scenarios that you can look at that include photos and audio to help you decide what to do in an emergency. The idea is that you can start the app and set the phone aside and follow the instructions for the emergency care. In addition, Phone Aid has a text reference that you can search for lesser emergency information. All of this and the app is only $1.99 to download. Unfortunately it is only for the iPhone and iPad. (What about those of us who use the Android platform?)

First Aid is an Android app you may want to download. It has a section called Life Saving Procedures that gives you explicit instructions on how to perform life saving techniques like the Heimlich maneuver and CPR. First aid also has a category that tells you if something is a first aid related Myth or fact. If it is a myth, First Aid gives you the corrected solution. The app can also test you on your knowledge. It also has a Calls section that allows you to store emergency phone number to call. The app from teltea.com and is free.
