Iron Fence Vs Wood Fence For Privacy And Security Fencing
Both iron and wood are popular choices for use in fencing around the home
, and for a number of other applications. Each material has several advantages and disadvantages, and is better suited for certain jobs than the other.
It is important to know which type of material is right to get a specific job done, so here we will take a brief look at a comparison between the two materials in terms of fencing for a variety of uses.
Perhaps the most common thing both iron and wood fences are used for is home privacy. Both are good choices because they provide sturdy, strong barriers that can deter unwanted people and animals from entering the area around the house. However, each has certain advantages that the other does not. For example, iron is stronger than wood, and because of this is more resistant to intrusion and also easier to maintain.
Wood, on the other hand, has the advantage of being able to be placed in panels set close together, creating a solid barrier that blocks visibility. It is very hard to effectively block visibility with iron bars.
Both iron and wood are aesthetically appealing, although each creates a very different look. Wooden fences tend to be less foreboding and imposing than iron, while iron can be strong yet elegant. Iron is used more frequently in larger estates, and in combination with stone walls. Wood is a good way to fence off backyards, gardens, and other areas around smaller homes. It can be used as a decorative or semi-decorative fence more easily than iron, such as with the classic white picket fence.
Wood is a little more costly to maintain than iron, because it requires a fresh coat of paint to maintain its appearance and resist the warping effects of water and temperature variation. Iron is more resistant to weathering, but can be corroded by sea air and other forces.
The bottom line is that iron is more expensive to purchase, install, and repair, but easier and cheaper to maintain, and stronger than wood. Wood provides a better curtain against visibility, however. Iron can also be worked into more shapes than wood, allowing it to be made into a variety of appearances.
If a high level of security is important, or if you want your home to have an elegant yet imposing look, go with iron, whereas if you want a softer, more welcoming vibe, choose wood.
