Iron Man 2 Movie Review | Hollywood Movie

Sequels can be a daunting task and very rarely do we get a Godfather II or The Dark Knight

. The list just got little bigger thanks to Iron Man 2, which successfully raises the bar set by its predecessor.

Billionaire arms dealer Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has in his own words privatized world peace. Everyone knows that he is Iron Man and bought his assurances that as long as Iron Man exists no enemy in the world can threaten America. The public believe in him but the United States government wants Tony to hand over the technology which could be incorporated into the militarys future plans. Tony mocks the very Senate hearing that tries to fry him and also snubs Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a competitor to Stark Industries, who desperately wants to succeed like Stark.

Far bigger troubles plague Tony who, unknown to anyone else, is dying as a result of exposure to the material that keeps him alive. But nothing could prepare Tony for the assault of Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), the son of the disgraced Russian scientist who previously worked for Stark Industries. Obsessed with destroying Tony, Ivan uses his fathers design and shows the world that Iron Man isnt invincible. While Iron Man manages to trap Vanko, sensing his opportunity Hammer teams up with Vanko to kill Tony.

Convinced that he will never find a substitute material to keep him alive, Tony hands over his company to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and starts for living each day as if it were the last. He meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who tells him that there is still hope for him and hands over a secret box. As Tony starts unlocks the secrets of his fathers legacy, Vanko prepares for the final battle. At the Stark Expo when Hammer reveals the new look of the American soldier based on Tonys Iron Man technology he has no idea that his monster Vanko will turn against everyone.

Iron Man 2 is guilty of packing in a little too much when it comes to the excitement factor but in the end it doesnt really matter. The thing that separated Iron Man from other superhero films was its very 3dimensional treatment to an inherently 2 dimensional source. While the sequel has more comic book elements than the first one director Jon Fareau doesnt trade the real world treatment. Justin Therouxs screenplay makes space for the new cast that boasts of Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell.

Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark and is top-notch but the best thing about the film is Mickey Rourke. His understated and uber cool presence plays the perfect foil to Downey Jr.s over the top Tony Stark. Rourke brings a lot of believability to Ivan Vanko and is simply superb. Johansson and Samuel L Jackson have comparatively smaller parts but they are sure to play a bigger role in subsequent installments. Iron Man 2 is as solid as they get.
