Irreparable Damage to Humanity (In memory of Justin Bangura and Alfred Sandi)

It is often said that death is a necessary end to the existence of mankind. This nobody can contest and it will remain a fact, for the universe is been created on this foundation. The death of the two brothers Alfred Sandi and Justin Bangura in less than a month reminds me of a popular song "The World is not my Home". I had a shock in life at a tender age when I lost my entire family in an accident in 1990, remaining alone on earth with no brothers and sisters, nor a father or mother. I was again reminded of that trauma when I received the news of the death of Alfred Sandi and Justin Bangura, true friends and brothers all these years.

Away from home studying at the University of Ibadan Nigeria, news about my country is my source of courage. The news of the death of Alfred Sandi was received when I was browsing the net trying to go through the newspapers back home. Immediately I opened the webpage of the Awareness Times Newspaper, I saw the headline, giving news about the death of Alfred Sandi. Very nervous, I stepped out of the internet caf and immediately made a call on Justin Bangura. He answered in a very solemn voice and said Mr. T , as I am fondly called by the two people, "na dis meet me oh" meaning this is what has happened to me referring to the death of Alfred Sandi. I was beaten down completely, collected my computer and went to my hostel. I stayed in my room for the rest of the day without attending lectures. In tears, I recall those days when together with Alfred Sandi criss-cross the entire Sierra Leone in his project activities as head of CORD S/L. His sense of humor and sensitivity to the situation of others has always made him a good manager of CORD S/L and his family. But when I recall all of these, my greatest concern was the future of CORD S/L. Time and energy spent in building this institution that is widely recognized at both national and international level is beyond my scope of imagination. So the question of the survival of this institution was my concern in addition to the family responsibilities left behind by Alfred Sandi.

My source of courage later was that Justin Bangura; the brain behind the formation of this local NGO, CORD S/L was alive and could easily step in to manage the institution and the family of his brother, Alfred Sandi. It was now my conviction that the damage caused by the death of Alfred Sandi was going to be taken care of with the presence of Justin Bangura. Before the 40th day ceremony of Alfred Sandi, late at night while in bed, I received a call from a friend Mohamed Swarray only to give me another shocking news, this time around the death of Justin Bangura.. My very first question I asked myself was "is this how human creation is, full of joy that can easily be eroded by death?" it was a nightmare for I was now made to know that the damage caused by death is irreparable. Justin Bangura is a northerner and me a southerner. You have to get very close to the two of us before you will get to know that we are indeed not really biological brothers. But the intimacy between the two of us was such that I named my second son Justin. His investment initiatives back home in areas of farming, livestock, housing, gas station he was about to start etc I am sure will now suffer some setbacks. The people of Yalisanda where we use to spend weekends will surely miss this caring figure. How I wish I have the capacity to respond to the needs of those old people who usually flock the compound upon the arrival of Justin in Yaliesanda.

However, it is now evident that the gap created by death is irrecoverable and that extensive work has to be done by family members and love ones so as to close that gap. Interestingly, when I reflect on my situation, the pains I have gone through, the happiness I sometimes enjoy tells me that the solution to damage caused by death is in the hands of no less a person but GOD. To realize this, those left behind must be resolute and chose between hard work and laziness. The human salvation that breaks through the gap left behind by death is hard work. The absence of this is another irrecoverable damage.
