Working in home health can be a rewarding career choice if you are interested in health care and have training in nursing or health care services

. Home health workers provide a valuable service, working through nursing agencies and care agencies to provide care to patients in their homes.

A home health aid may need to perform a variety of health care services, from routine tests such as blood sugar levels for diabetics, to monitoring medical prescriptions taken, to changing bedding and assisting patients with routine personal hygiene care.

Home health aides usually need to be Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Various agencies provide training and certification for CNAs. Once you have received your CNA certification, many local jobs will be open to you, including working as a home health aide or home health care aid. Depending on the home health agencies you work with, you may be required to complete additional tests or training to provide home health services.

Hospice is a type of care offered through home health care services. Not all home health services are hospice - which is the practice of making patients (who are generally terminally ill) comfortable in a non-hospital setting. Some home health care workers provide hospice services to some or all of the home health patients they visit during their work day. For this reason, it's important that home health workers be comfortable interacting with terminally ill patients.

If you are interested in working in home health care, it's a good idea to speak with a CNA who works in home health care or who has worked in hospice or home health care in the past. You can ask other CNAs which agencies they worked with, what kinds of health care services they provides, what other medical professionals they worked with, and what additional tests and training they had to complete before beginning work in home health care. This can give you a good idea of what to expect as an employee as a home health care worker, what challenges you will face in your daily work, and what the rewards of working with patients in their homes are.

When applying for a home health care position, make sure you discuss the types of health care you will be providing with the agency or agencies you are applying with. Have a good understanding of what a typical work day will look like for you, whether you will be providing routine health care, hospice care, or other specialized care. You should be comfortable with each type of health care you will be asked to provide and always ask your supervisor for assistance if you are uncomfortable with or unfamiliar with something you are asked to do.

Working in home health care often offers the advantage of getting to know the patients you work with on a more personal level and gives you the satisfaction of knowing you provide important medical services to patients who are unable or who do not wish to leave their home. Like any job, home health care also has its challenges. Understanding what to expect and speaking with others who are familiar with the job will give you the best chance at success in the home health care field.
