Is A Cordless Lawnmower The Right Choice For You And Your Lawn?
Until fairly recently most lawnmowers were petrol driven as they were the easiest to use
. Once filled with petrol and started they can mow a large area of lawn easily. they do have some disadvantages however, the biggest probably being the noise and the pollution they produce.
Nowadays however cordless lawnmowers are becoming more popular as battery life improves and it is now possible to mow a fairly large area on one recharge. Unlike electric lawnmowers with cords they are not awkward to use and you don't have to trail a long cable behind you as you mow. You can also use them at a distance from the house, unlike a corded mower which will usually only have a 100 ft power cord. You won't be in danger of mowing over the power cord either!
How to Choose the Battery
Cordless lawnmowers then are easy to use and versatile but how much grass they can mow on one recharge will depend on the battery. Many batteries last up to an hour but some only 30 minutes so take care when buying to make sure you get one with the longest possible life. Rechargeable batteries last around five years before needing replacement.
Which type of battery should you choose? There are three types currently used for lawnmowers, lead acid (which are also used in cars), lithium and nickel cadmium. We recommend nickel cadmium batteries as they last longer and are easily recycled. Lithium batteries are expensive and do not have a high storage capacity. Looking after nickel cadmium batteries is easy as they are maintenance free.
Increasing the Lifetime of the Battery
To make sure you get the longest possible life from your battery try not to mow the grass when it is wet as this puts more strain on both the lawnmower and the battery. It's not good for your lawn either! Also mow the grass before it gets too long so that you are cutting off less than three inches.
More Advantages of Cordless Lawnmowers
Cordless lawnmowers are also cheaper to buy than petrol driven mowers and cost less to run. They are also much easier to maintain as they are virtually maintenance free. You just need to keep them clean and the blades free of grass. A petrol mower will need regular maintenance just like a car including changing the plugs and filters.
Conclusion
Cordless lawnmowers have improved enormously in the last few years and are now a real alternative to petrol or corded electric lawnmowers. If you are concerned with the environment, want to mow your lawn without too much noise or pollution and don't have a huge area to mow we think these types of mowers are ideal.
