Is A New Kitchen Island A Solution For Your Needs?

When my spouse and I moved into our new townhouse

, we were expecting to enjoy the luxurious new space that initially seemed so much more expansive than the cooking area found in our modest one-bedroom apartment. But we were soon dismayed to realize that the cabinet space was about equal--it was only distributed over a wider space.

This has made it difficult to store newly acquired kitchen utensils, not to mention all of the equipment we already had. That is why my spouse has decided to build an island that will provide additional storage space for our pots and pans.

Plus, this floating counter space will supplement our need for preparation room, which we are currently lacking. If you feel like you are in the same position--in need of additional countertop space or more cupboards--but don't know where to start, take stock of your kitchen to determine if are able to construct and implement an island.

First of all, you need to decide how large an island you would like. This will in part be based upon how much room you have to spare, so even if you would like to construct as large a counter as possible, you may have to compromise if there just isn't the room for it.

However, be aware that you can easily attach wheels to the island in order to make it portable. When the cooking area gets a little crowded, it can be whisked out of the way to give more breathing room. It could even be transported to the dining room when necessary to create buffet space.

After making any final revisions on the island's measurements, take a trip to your local home improvement specialty store to select wood. You will certainly need something sturdy and high-quality that can endure a little abuse (however unintentional it may be).

While you will want to take into account the decor of your kitchen, you should also remember that most lumber can be stained to suit your personal taste--so, again, focus on the quality of the wood. Don't forget to seal it in order to protect against spills and other types of damage.

When it comes to the countertop itself, you can choose one of several options. It is fairly commonplace to select wax-sealed lumber, but another popular option involves using small kitchen tiles with grout holding them together.

Both of these potential countertops can be contaminated if you use the surface to cut meat or vegetables, so try to continually use a cutting board as your main chopping surface.

Before you finish the island, decide what you will store inside. Our island will be sealed from the inside in order to contain our trash can and prevent the spread of odors, so we will need custom drawers to allow us to access the waste bin without having to reach inside.

Building a custom island for our kitchen will be a great solution to our storage and countertop needs. It isn't a very difficult task, either, so if this sounds like a solution to you, too, then start taking measurements today!
