Is Asthma Really Linked To Eczema?

It is over 40 years since a man walked on the moon and in that time we have not found

a cure for many of the most common life threatening diseases that inflict the human race. Compared to this great achievement finding a cure for cancer or even asthma would seem like a walk in the park. Over 40 years later we are still no closer to finding a cure than we were all those years ago. However, there is always a place for hope and in the cases of eczema and asthma where studies have shown a link, the development of one cure increases the chances of a cure in the other.

Eczema is a skin condition that causes red itchy rashes on the skin. These rashes can become inflamed and swell up making them very sensitive and sore to the touch. For some suffers the rashes can create unbearable itchiness resulting in frantic scratching to ease the discomfort. This scratching eventually scrapes the layer of skin causing it to bleed and increasing the risk of infection. As there is no cure for eczema the condition can be treated with skin cream. Certain creams contain different levels of corticosteroids which have proven to be effective at relieving the symptoms of eczema.

Asthma is a condition that affects the lungs. This happens when the lungs become inflamed causing the airways to constrict making breathing very difficult. The cases of asthma are increasing with nearly 300 million people being affected. Asthma can come in a mild form or can be more chronic and it is estimated that over 4000 deaths in America can be related to asthma. The symptoms of this disease can be recognised by the sufferer experiencing chronic coughing, shortness of breath and tiredness. In the most chronic cases people can suffer from asthma attacks where the lungs become so inflamed the airways constrict to the degree that makes breathing near impossible. As with eczema there is no known cure.

For a long time these two conditions were considered to be completely unrelated. However, further studies into children with eczema revealed a high proportion either had or were developing asthma. During these studies a fascinating scientific discovery revealed that the skin damage caused by eczema discharges a substance into the bloodstream that initiates asthma like symptoms in the lungs. This can in many cases lead to full-blown asthma.

In medical terms this discovery was a massive development. It has given the scientific world the knowledge to take a major step forward in finding a way to stop the secretion of this substance into the body. If this is successful it will make a huge impact in preventing asthma in millions of men, women and children.
