Is Beautiful Skin Under Our Control?
Some people develop marks at a few pounds of weight gain
, while some can endure even a pregnancy belly. Certain factors are beyond our control, such as age and genetic makeup. However, we can control other factors, one of them being prevention rather than reduction of stretch marks.
Say, if you are pregnant, you can start using a stretch mark cream well before your skin shows the marks. This strengthens your skin and makes it resilient enough to withstand over-stretching.
Lets see the factors that we can control and how
Stop yo-yo dieting
Gaining or losing weight rapidly and frequently makes your skin prone to developing stretch marks. In normal stretching, your skin can bounce back to its original position thanks to collagen, which is a protein that makes up the connective tissue of your skin.
However, when your skin is stretched beyond its endurance capacity, collagen formation is disturbed and the tissues break. Maintaining a steady (and healthy) weight contributes to healthy skin.
Avoid dry skin
Dry skin is less supple and elastic. So it is more likely to break or tear when stretched. A well-hydrated skin can adapt to the rapid changes in the body, such as weight gain, and shape itself accordingly without tearing. Now you realize why moisturizing is inevitable. Drink plenty of fluids to keep skin cells hydrated from within. Vitamin A and C, and antioxidants strengthen the skin.
Lets see the factors that we cannot control
Aging
With age, your skin becomes less able to produce enough collagen. This snatches the elasticity of the connective tissue. When this happens, your skin cannot come back to its original position or endure more stretching.
Thats the reason women who get pregnant at a later age are more vulnerable to developing marks on their abdomen and other areas of maximum fat deposits. In this case, reduction of stretch marks is possible only through a powerful topical formula.
Genetic makeup
Your genetic makeup, especially family history of getting marks and skin color, play a vital role in making your skin more prone or less prone to developing marks. Scientists dont know yet, the exact reason, but according to them, dark-skinned women are less vulnerable to get marks than light-skinned women. Moreover, if your mother got marks during pregnancy, you will too.
In such situations, you can do nothing much, except get a good stretch mark lotion and patiently wait for your marks to fade. If the lotion is good, the marks will truly go away. If you get just any other mark removal cream from the counter, you may wait endlessly for marks to go away.
Having it in your genes to get marks does not imply that you stop caring for your skin assuming that in any case, you will get the marks. Wrong! Reduction of stretch marks is tougher than prevention of marks. So, if you know that your skin is going to expand (as in pregnancy), be wise and use a stretch mark product well in advance. Stop marks in their tracks!
