Is Blog Commenting Effetive At All Anymore?

If you make a visit to the majority of the webmaster forums online

, the one argument that seems to ensue is the value of blog commenting for earning one way backlinks. So, to answer whether or not that method is valuable or not, I will simply say that is it a very valuable method of promotion, when used responsibly. You will have to read on to see my conclusion to this argument.

To start this piece, I am going to have to talk about the importance of having a natural backlinks structure. What do I mean when I say this? I mean a structure that looks like it has been created naturally, that does not appear spam like. As you are probably aware, the team behind Google are very dedicated when it comes to detecting link spam, and as such, they understand the various methods used to game their search engine. This means that any website that they discover that is using tactics to game the system will more than likely lose out in the SERPS.

With that part aside, having a varied backlink structure is going to look much more natural in the eyes of Google. Lets use an example. A website that has earned 10,000 backlinks from article submissions is more likely to lose out in the rankings than a website that has varied backlinks from various sources. So, the key is to balance everything out, and earn backlinks from a variety of sources.

Now, back to the blog commenting debate. I see it in as many webmaster forum posts as I can count, that blog commenting is extremely ineffective. Let me break the ice as gently as I can. If you have been told that blog commenting is an amazing method of high PageRank backlink generation, then you have been deceived. However, if you already have a steady collection of one way backlinks, by adding a few blog comments in here and there, you will most definitely achieve results, as this appears quite natural to Google.

So, where to now? There is something else that I need to cover, and that relates to follow and nofollow links. It is an uneducated guess that most webmeisters make when referring to the value of only generating foldable backlinks. Sure, followable links pass on PageRank, however, like I have mentioned earlier, a natural backlink structure involves a variety of backlinks from various sources. Again, as much as we may not completely understand exactly how the search engines work, the idea is always going to be to make sure that backlinks are completely varied, of different types, and so on. The same principals are applied to backlinks from high PageRank only websites.

In all cases, the best practice is to simply forget about PageRank, and forget about links that are only followable links. The best practice is to focus on a variety of link types, so that you can appear as being very natural to Google. Then again, so many webmeisters complain that by also focusing on nofollow backlinks is a bad investment of time, this is definitely not true. It is a simple case of avoiding being flagged by Google as gaming their system. Sure, you can go ahead and focus on only followable links, but that will be your loss unfortunately, and one that I certainly do not recommend.

So, if we look back to the opening question, whether or not blog commenting is really worth your time, the answer is yes. The reason being is that in part of any SEO or link building campaign, a diverse link structure is always a vital part to creeping your way up the search engine rankings, and just so long as you pick a wide variety of link sources, you will appear natural to Google when they rank websites in their index. Sure, you can definitely substitute blog commenting with other methods, such as forum posting or even guest blogging, however, with this being such an easy, fun, and quick method of backlinks generation, is certainly is one of the most practical methods.
