Is Bottled Water Really Good For Us?

In many countries people are seeking clean drinking water by using bottled water

, including people in developed nations such as the US who spend billions of dollars buying bottled water even though they are provided with clean drinking water from the tap. But, is bottled water really for us? I dare not to say yes.

Firstly, Bottled water isn't a good value. In china, the average price of bottled water is around 2 Yuan every 500ml. while plain boiled water only costs people about 3 Yuan per ton. It leads to great waste of money with which we can do to help people in poor areas, especially in china. Secondly, Bottled water is no healthier than plain boiled water. In theory, bottled water in China is under the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration. But in practice, because water systems in the developing world are not well-regulated, about 70 percent of bottled water never crosses state lines for sale. Thirdly, bottled water means garbage. Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. According to latest survey, that plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic has been used to make bottles, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away, which means only 1 in 5 can be reused. The rest 4 are ending in the world's major oceans. This represents a great risk to marine life, killing birds and fish which mistake our garbage for food. Thanks to its slow decay rate, the majority of all plastics ever produced still exist somewhere. Whats more, bottled water means less attention to public systems. Many people drink bottled water because they don't like the taste of their local tap water, or because they question its safety. They try to ignore or to bear the problem without trying to solve it. Only the very few of them tend to report to the government. It definitely will cause government to pay less attention to public systems.

In reality, bottled water is just water. There is no big difference between bottled water and plain boiled water. Maybe Bottled water is big business and may gain the industry a lot of profits. But in terms of sustainability, bottled water is a dry well. It's costly, wasteful and bad to public health. We should not drink any bottle of this for the environments sake.
