Is Fear Keeping You From Having Your Eyes Checked Out?

There is one reason why so many people avoid the process of choosing an eye doctor: fear

. They aren't necessarily scared that the optometrist might harm them, but they may be scared that they'll discover that their eyesight requires that they wear glasses. Or perhaps they are just scared of the entire process, as they're unsure what an eye doctor appointment actually entails. There is no reason to be scared of visiting the optometrist. Optometrists are professionals trained to properly care for the eyes of their patients, and they only want to help. As for what happens at the initial appointment, hopefully this article can help calm your fears in regards to that.

The First Appointment

Choosing an eye doctor shouldn't have to be an overly difficult process. You do, however, want to do everything you can to make certain you are placing the care of your eyes in the hands of a reputable professional. Before you go to any physician, make sure you contact the doctors who are in your area and ask questions about what type of insurance they accept, and what type of training they've had. At your first appointment, you'll be asked to fill out various forms. These forms help the optometrist understand what your general health condition is and what your complaints are, if you have any. After you have finished filling out the paperwork, the optometrist will see you and will likely ask you more questions about your general health and the health of your eyes.

Once all of the questions have been answered to the doctor's satisfaction, they will begin an examination of your eye. The optometrist will look first at the outside of your eye, and then the inside, using various medical instruments in order to do so. During the examination, the doctor will be looking for anything that looks unusual in or around your eyes. They will examine the retina, the pupil, the optic nerve, the muscles, the lens, the blood vessels, the eyelids, the iris, and the cornea. The condition of your eyes will help the doctor determine the general overall health of your eyes.

Once the examination is complete, the optometrist will speak with you about the condition of your eyes and will tell you if he/she feels there is something that needs to be treated or if you do not require any current treatment. If your eyes are in pristine condition, he may recommend that you make regular visits to the optometrist's office every year or two in order to keep track of any possible changes in your eyes. Doing so will allow any changes to be caught quickly and addressed.

If there is something that needs to be corrected with your eyesight, the doctor will be able to lay out a treatment plan for you. Most good optometrists are more than willing to work with their patients to get the best results possible for their eyes. Don't be scared of choosing an eye doctor - they are in business to help you. The initial appointment should not scare you, but instead relieve any fears or concerns you might have had about having your eyes checked.
