Is Fish Oil A Boon Or Curse To Heart?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids for human health that are to be supplied to the body through diet
. Fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafood including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Apart from live sources dietary supplements of fish are available in plenty. The vitamin A and D rich diet of omega-3 fatty acids play vital role in growth and development as well as for active function of brain. Several clinical evidences also put forth numerous benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in reducing cardiovascular risks as well as in safeguarding heart and its activities. But they failed to explain the exact mechanism how these acids are useful.
Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with several advantages; unfortunately recent studies reported that these substances may have profound effect on heart palpitations. Most of the current studies even proved little effect or benefits of
fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids on heart health which is a counterfeit to the earlier studies. The utmost concerned problem is heart palpitations.
Heart palpitations can be simply termed as arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats or a change in the rhythm of heartbeat. They can be felt in the chest, throat or neck and can occur at any time such as while working, walking or watching television etc. You feel the missing heart beats or skipping of beats during palpitations. Mostly palpitations are not life threatening but when accompanied with shortness of breath, sweating and pale skin may be a sign of heart attack.
If you are allergic to fish or if you have an implanted defibrillator you may experience heart palpitations on consumption of fish oil supplements. The proteins present in the fish may trigger allergies. Mild allergic reactions may cause skin irritation, nasal congestion and stomach pain. Heart palpitation may lead to life threatening anaphylaxis. Constriction of lungs; dilation of blood vessels, swelling of soft tissues etc are the consequences of anaphylaxis. This in turn may result in light headedness, dizziness, reduced or decreased blood pressure and difficulty in breathing. All these symptoms may enhance heart palpitations.
Overall, health benefits of
Omega-3 fatty acid rich diet and dietary supplements of fish are to be utilised cautiously under the supervision of a clinician for better health benefits and to safeguard your precious life.
