Is It Good Or Bad For Us Now?
According to the 2010 National Women's Law Center Report Card on women's health
, the 10 worst states for women's health were Mississippi, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, West Virginia and Wyoming. The problems included high rates of obesity, smoking, inactivity and chronic illness. In these states there were low percentages of women with health insurance, doctors, mammograms and prenatal care. Several states had declines in life expectancy. Overall, Massachusetts was the healthiest state for women. When the pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, they didn't realize they were "between a rock" and harder places for women's health.
Mothers with high blood pressure are linked to children with lower IQ's. Previous studies have shown high blood pressure can cause low birth weight and early delivery, but a study of 400 men published in the journal Neurology found men born to women with high blood pressure scored an average of 4 points lower on cognitive tests later in life. The likelihood for lower cognitive ability originates in the prenatal period when the majority of development of brain structure and function occurs. One in 13 pregnant women has high blood pressure and shouldn't take this study with "a grain of salt".
Too much calcium can cause problems. Health officials recommend women and men under age 50 take 1,000 milligrams daily. For men past 70 and women past menopause - when an estrogen drop causes bone loss - the recommendation is 1,200 milligrams. Because the body can handle only 600 milligrams at once, 2,000 milligrams are too much and can build up in the blood stream, causing kidney stones. Milk, yogurt and cheese contain calcium. So do broccoli, oranges and salmon. Estimate your daily intake of calcium from food before supplementing. There can be too much of a good thing.
Too many egg yolks can cause problems too. According to a study published in Atherosclerosis, people eating 3 or more egg yolks weekly increased plaque buildup 66% - as much as smoking does. Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque builds up in blood vessels, limiting the blood passing through the heart. One jumbo egg yolk has approximately 237 milligrams of cholesterol. People with high LDL cholesterol or who take a blood-cholesterol-lowering medication should eat less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol daily. People without underlying heart disease supposedly can eat 300 milligrams. Thus we shouldn't put all our egg yolks in one shopping basket.
