Is It Healthy For Kids To Spend A Long Time Infront Of The TV?

It's now estimated that children spend as much as 6 hours in front of the screen every day

. This isn't just the TV screen, but the computer screen as well. Obviously, if the child is watching something educational, this isn't too much of a problem, but how often is this likely to end up the case?

The government seems to spend a substantial amount both time and expense advising parents on the best way in which to provide their kids with healthy diets, but not much appears to be said about the amount of time children spend with their eyes glued to the screen. I remember growing up as a child, which was only 20 years ago, and there being kids playing outside daily. And this didn't just apply to my street. You were certain to see children either playing outside on the street, or playing in parks after school, and on the weekends. Nowadays, it is a rare occurrence. I'll visit the park on a nice warm day, and whereas in my day it might be packed with kids playing ball games, playing around attempting to catch each other, or playing on the swings etc, nowadays you'll be lucky to observe just a small number of children. In my opinion it's a grave shame, and something which will severely negatively impact society once these children become adults, and as they themselves have children.

Exactly how much are these children losing out on the life experiences by staying glued to the screen alone. Lacking fun outdoors, experiencing life, socialising, gaining knowledge through their mistakes. It's all well parents saying they want their child to be inside as it's too dangerous outside, or they wish to keep close track of them. This really is fine if the family truly live in a rough neighbourhood, but what percentage of us can truly say that? I really feel children in this point in time, whilst having several advantages as a result of technology over previous generations, may also be suffering attributable to these technologies. And unfortunately, the end result of this may not be known until way into the future, when it might possible be too late.
