Pneumonia is a serious sickness that often resembles a cold. the first time I had it, despite being extremely ill, I was sure I merely had a bad cold. Unfortunately many people die from pneumonia, and I although I fully recovered, I clearly should have gone to see a doctor! Three million people a year catch it, and it's the sixth leading cause of death. Before antibiotics were developed, as many as one third of people whom contracted it died. Fortunately the statistics are not as grim today but many people still die from it.

There are several types of pneumonia, including bacterial, fungal, viral, and more. All can be deadly. It's complicated by the fact that it often comes on top of a cold or the flu. What are symptoms of pneumonia?

Common symptoms include coughing, shivering, and fever, which unfortunately are also symptoms of the common cold and other sicknesses. You can have it and not show all the common symptoms as well.

Some of the classic symptoms used to diagnose pneumonia include coughing up greenish or yellowish mucus, chest pain when breathing, shortness of breath, and body parts like lips and fingers turning blue from a lack of oxygen.

Pneumonia needs to be treated as quickly as possible. If you suspect you or someone else has pneumonia, a trip to the doctors or the emergency room quickly is in order. You do not want to become another statistic, another person who died from pneumonia, so don't take any chances!
