Is It Really Worthwhile Leaving The Uk For Canada?
Before the global recession rocked the world's economy in recent years
, life in the UK was good. Unemployment was relatively low, petrol prices were less than 1 pound a litre and the housing market was booming.
As soon as the recession hit, however, all this changed.
The Office for National Statistics show that unemployment has risen considerably and as of June 2010 (the second quarter of 2010), it stood at 7.8 percent; petrol prices are now 116.5 pence per litre, according to AA's Fuel Price report for August 2010 and the BBC reported on 28 May 2010 that the average price of a house in the UK is currently 224,064 pounds.
Due to this reason, it's therefore understandable that more and more people are looking to leave the UK each year, many often applying for a Canada visa and living their life in the breathtakingly beautiful country above North America.
The issue is that with life having been so poor in the UK in recent years, there's a certain degree of the grass always being greener on the other side and wearing rose tinted glasses.
Yes, applying for a Canada visa and moving to the country may seem like a good idea, escaping the drudgery that's apparent in the UK, but does life in Canada seem so good because the country is that fantastic or is it simply an illusion due to the UK being so poor?
And the simple answer is it's likely to be a bit of both for most people.
There's no doubt that Canada is a fantastic country to live in. Apart from the fact it's population density is tiny (the country covers 3,854,085 square miles, yet only has an estimated population of 34,218,000, meaning there are just 8.3 people in every square mile), which means that there's masses of unspoilt greenery, many of the country's cities often rank well in The Economist's World's Most Liveable Cities list. In 2010, for example, the top 10 consisted of 3 Canadian cities, with one of them - Vancouver - taking the top spot.
Unfortunately, this is often the part where you are found to be looking through rose tinted spectacles.
Look at something like the unemployment rate and it becomes apparent that life isn't too dissimilar to that in the UK - unemployment in the country currently stands at 8 percent, according to Statistics Canada.
What's more, if you're escaping the UK and hoping for great weather, Canada possibly isn't the best place to go. Whilst the summers are often like the UK's, the winter's are substantially colder and in some parts of the country, temperatures can drop below minus 40 degrees centigrade and snow can lay for almost half the year in the northern parts of the country.
Deciding on whether you should move to Canada or not from the UK is a big decision as there are a lot of pros and cons for both. Some people will try to influence you to emigrate and others will explain why it's better to stay. Unfortunately, only you can make the final decision - just make sure that you're as informed as possible before you make the decision and chances are you'll be happy with the one you make.
