Is It Unhealthy To Switch Prescription Glasses From Day To Day?
We generally come across this popular advice that it is not healthy to switch prescription glasses
. Most users and non-users believe that the switching of the prescription glasses will worsen the condition of the eyesight leading to the increase of the visual problems.
Whether there is any rationale in that fear or not can be understood if we know the basic reason of the vision disorders. During the early childhood days, your eyes are still in the development stage. During this phase, unhealthy habits like glued to the TV for more than average time or excessive reading in poor light, damages the shape of the eye. Obviously, when the shape of the eye is damaged, poor eyesight will follow. Thus switching prescription glasses will not make things worse. As with the growing age, the occurrence of presbyopia also increases, prescription glasses or its switching cannot prevent it.
There are many occasions where the use of more than one pair of prescription glasses becomes absolutely necessary. For example, on a beach, if you want to read a book or magazine using your regular prescription glasses, but also want to protect your eyes from the sun, you will need both the pair of prescription glasses and a sunglass. Or suppose you are driving down an unfamiliar road with a map in your hand. You will need long-distance glasses to check what lies ahead, while again, you will require something akin of
reading glasses, which will enhance your nearby vision, to properly read the map. Changing prescription glasses according to your requirement is downright dangerous at those moments. Situations like these almost occur to anyone, where there is a need for more than one power on the lenses, without the requirement of switching the prescription glasses. To counter these situations, you can take advantage of the bifocal and varifocal glasses.
Bifocal glasses are the ones which have their lenses divided into two different halves. The upper half has a power which helps you to view objects at a distance while the lower half has a higher power to facilitate the nearby viewing. It takes a beat of practice to get use to looking through the right half at the right time.
Varifocal Glasses on the other hand, have lenses which have a gradual increase of power from the top to the bottom. Like the bifocal glasses, the upper and lower parts of the lenses perform the same functions while the middle part helps in the intermediate viewing. As there are no lines which run through the transition between the different powers are much easier.
