When kids and teens are behaving badly, the classic kind of punishment is to take something away from them. With kids this can often be a favorite toy, blanket, or other cherished item. With teens, often these things include a different kind of toy' like cars, cell phones or knocking a few hours off the curfew. Increasingly, this thing being eliminated or taken away is the internet. Kids today can tend to spend way too much time on the internet, and parents feel helpless to keep them away. Whether temporarily eliminating internet use as a punishment or trying to keep kids away from the internet due to personal or ideological preferences, in today's world it's becoming increasingly impossible to say no' to the Net. Not only can kids get online at school, there are any number of internet cafes, libraries, and other locations where they can easily get around any kind of punishment. This goes double for cell phones and other portable electronic devices that many parents don't even realize have internet capabilities until the phone bill arrives! The big question then, is that if the internet is such an integral part of life today, is it right to keep kids away, or is saying no internet' a cruel and unusual punishment?
With every generation, the way that social structures form changes. This time, however, growing up with the internet has changed the way people interact drastically. While many parents feel this being online all the time craze is unhealthy and a passing fad, the reality is that people in the future will surely communicate more and more often with the internet. Today most businesses and places of employment use the internet, as do most schools. Of course as with any tool it can be used for good or ill, and social networking sites are accessed, often far more easily, than library databanks. Therefore, is using the internet an important social development skill that kids should learn, or simply another way to rot their brains in a consumer and technology driven society gone mad?
Today, the Government is looking into mandating last mile internet connectivity to high speed connections through alternative means like satellite internet broadband, or even WiMax internet which is sent in signal with towers. If the government thinks it's important to have services like satellite internet broadband, then how can an individual family say no?' If this is a service that really is essential to the growth of the economy, country and individuals of the future, then what rights do families have to eliminate it from a child's repertoire? Just like with any language,' children who learn computers from an early age are far more fluent' as adults. However, with the amount of filth and unfit content out there on the Net, how can parents be expected to simply open such a door to children without any kind of monitoring or protection?
For families interested in high speed internet, whether regular terrestrial broadband or satellite internet, there are ways to stay on top of internet usage without completely eliminating it. One example is software that tracks the web pages visited by your computer. Another is software that eliminates any sites containing elicit or explicit' content from being accessed without special parents-only codes. In order to fully appreciate the internet, it seems parents will have to become used to the duality of its usefulness, and corruption.
