Is Music School Really The Best Place For Musical Prodigies?

Music school has long been touted as the place to go for perfecting ones craft and becoming the best musician one can be

. However, there have been cases where musical prodigies become famous without attending any form of school. But is this the right thing for everybody? Can genius really be cultivated outside the walls of a formal education?

Cultivation

In short, the answer is, in most cases, no. Yes, there will always be those who defy the odds and make it without a formal education, but thats the same thing in any field. Sometimes a genius is found who doesnt need any cultivation. For the large majority of people, though, cultivation is necessary. Its true that its possible to be creative anywhere, even in the shower, but refining that isnt easy. The individual might have the potential, but only through that formal education could that potential be achieved.

Life Skills

No matter how much of a genius somebody happens to be musically, the fact is that at music school a number of life skills are taught. Firstly, lets take into account that soft skills like punctuality, attendance, and dedication are learned and refined at a school. If a genius is just swanning around all day then they most likely wont be able to develop the discipline needed to make it in the music industry, unless they are particularly revolutionary.

Secondly, lets take into account the concept of social skills. Those who exist at a school will most likely be learning alongside others. Naturally, students will talk and will learn from each other. If someone decides to learn at home without any help then the chances are high that they wont get to learn from others at all. In fact, when it comes to actually socialising and performing in front of others it might be hard for them as they are simply not used to it.

Performance

Most music institutions will nearly always have public performances implemented into the syllabus. This gives all students the opportunity to get used to performing in front of a crowd. If the subject of music is studied outside of an academy such as this then it will be up to them to obtain public performances, which isnt always possible as few places are willing to try out a first-time musician. And thats what music is about, music is ultimately about performance.
