Is Online Sports Betting Ethical or Unethical
?
In the year 2006, the government of the Unites States of America, after much deliberation, finally declared online sports betting to be illegal. However, after all these years the issue of internet gambling is still a very complex one with widely differing opinions among people, depending on their mindset.
But the deeper question to be asked here is whether online betting is unethical in the first place or not. Again this question is bound to attract a lot of opposing answers. There are many countries where online gambling is still not illegal. Is this good or is it bad?
How it can be good
Basically, online gambling is just gambling made easy. It is easy to place bets over the internet. It is easy to place bets on multiple events going on around the world at any moment. It is easy to win money and get it transferred to your account electronically.
Even people who were averse to betting in the past have signed up for online sports betting, since they have found it to be a convenient way of earning some extra income. In some cases, it has been a sole source of income.
It is because big possibilities exist that millions of people have signed up for online sports betting. Since bookmakers also stand to make loads of money off betting, the government has a solid source of revenue too.
How it can be bad
Unfortunately, the boon of online betting is also essentially its bane. As probable it is that people can make a fortune out of gambling, higher probabilities exist of people losing most of the money that they have invested and become broke.
This has happened to a lot of people. They win a series of bets and earn some money out of it. Suddenly out of nowhere, they lost ten best in a row. In some extreme cases, people have lost millions of dollars in a single day.
It is because such disastrous events that many governments have declared online sports betting to be illegal and others are contemplating it.
The middle ground
What follows from the above discussion is that when we ask whether online gambling is ethical or not, we need to step back the look at the whole picture. Now, we will realize that online betting itself is not a problem. It is the addiction to betting which is the cause of untold misery for so many people.
Instead of completely banning internet gambling, governments can regulate online gambling. For example, they can set limits on how much a bettor can place bets for in a month or how much the bookmaker can take bets for.
This middle way would satisfy 95 percent of the people involved in this intense debate.
It would ensure a fair deal for both critics and proponents of online sports betting. Of course, this can piss of those who are at the extreme end at either side. But it would be the right thing to do and create a win-win situation for everybody, the bettors, the bookmakers and the administration.
