Is Our Cleaning Craze Creating Toxic Homes?
Is Our Cleaning Craze Creating Toxic Homes?
As parents, we all want the best for our children. One of our first responsibilities is keeping our kids safe and healthy. Keeping a clean home, is one of the many ways parents try to safe-guard their kids from germs and bacteria. Today, we have almost become fanatical when it comes to disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and anti-bacterial cleaning solutions. We think our actions are helping to protect our children, but could we be brewing toxic homes and making things worse?
The fact is, most people are spending more than ninety percent of their lives inside, so it only makes sense that we are able to enjoy a fresh and clean home. We want it to be free from offensive odors and bacteria. Our homes should be a safe haven, not a breeding ground for colds and flu. There is a trend where homes are becoming almost hospital grade sanitized, which is usually achieved by some off the store shelf product claiming to kill 99.9 percent of whatever. While it may feel fresh and clean, it could be one of many toxic homes today plastered in chemical residues.
First of all, when we use chemical cleaners, due to marketing, there is an impression that what we are using is safe. How many times have you used a spray cleaner, or a disinfecting wipe to clean a countertop or end table in your home? Not long after you clean, your precious toddler climbs all over, touching everything, and inevitably their hand goes right into their mouth. Perhaps you've spent the afternoon sanitizing your little one's crib with some off the shelf cleaner, and only hours later they are sleeping soundly in their safe crib. Most of us take these tasks for granted, and never consider what our kids could possibly be breathing in or being exposed to while they are playing and sleeping. Toxic homes can be a result of good parents, who unfortunately are just not provided with the real information you need to protect your family.
The number one reason for hospitization for kids is respiratory illnesses. Childhood asthma has jumped 400% over the past 20 years. Cancer is a leading cause of death in children age 5-9, second only to accidents or injuries. Truth is, we just don't know what the long term health risks are associated with chemical cleaning products. Now, I cannot say there is a direct link between these types of illnesses and common household products, since we have no research or data available to us. I am simply saying, common sense should tell you, that if we spend the majority of our time in our homes, we should be questioning what we use, and determining if we are helping our kids, or brewing toxic homes.
The important point here is, we can't sit around and worry about the toxic homes issue, we can work on our own personal solution. First, you need to educate yourself about the products you are using in your home, and ask yourself, is this something you would want to directly eat or inhale? You may reconsider products based on the fact that your child has direct contact through particles in the air, through skin absorption, or by touching their hands to their mouths. You can also research alternative options such as making your own with ingredients like lemon, orange or vinegar. With the going green trend, there are unique options provided such as indoor environment products and technologies. For example, I sanitize my home with the use of an air purifier that cleans surfaces. The reality is, we do have plenty of choices open to us, if we take the time to become educated, and not let our child's health and safety be swayed by smart marketing ploys . Avoid the toxic homes problem by gaining the knowledge you need to truly protect your family and provide a safe environment.
