Is Paraben-free The Newest Health Trend?
With the average lifetime span increasing steadily there is a growing focus on maintaining a youthful appearance
. The basis for much of this focus is your body's skin. Skin is the largest organ on your body and requires considerable care. WebMD lists five daily requirements for healthy skin:
* Water
* Thorough cleansing
* Balanced nutrition
* Toning
* Moisturizing
Keeping your skin well moisturized plays a vital role in retaining a youthful and healthy appearance. The proper use of lotions or skin creams can help avoid dry skin, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes that will ultimately age your skin faster. In fact, the Skin Care Resource Center states that "Maintaining well-moisturized facial skin is the cornerstone of any anti-aging skin rejuvenation regimen".
Many of the cosmetics and lotions that can help prevent the premature aging of your skin contain parabens. A paraben is a preservative that is used to prevent microbe growth within cosmetic, pharmaceutical and some food products due to their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. For instance, parabens can be found in the following products:
* Shampoos
* Moisturizers
* Personal lubricants
* Toothpaste
* Topical pharmaceuticals
* Shaving gels
* Sunless tanners
Despite the fact that they have recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, there has been a growing public concern about the possible negative effects of parabens on our health.
Have you ever used a new body moisturizer and found yourself with an obnoxious rash not long after? Most people attribute the rash to the product used. This may be true, but the specific cause of the rash is likely to be the paraben ingredient. Some dermatitis conditions are actually caused by an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the parabens.
Recently, however, some paraben studies have been focused on a much more grim possibility. Many people are now questioning the safety of these chemicals due to the chance of them having an estrogenic response on human tissue; or in simpler terms, having a similar effect to that of an increase of estrogen.
According to the Sprecher Institute for Comparative Cancer Research, "Estrogen may be implicated in breast cancer risk because of: 1) its role in stimulating breast cell division; 2) its work during the critical periods of breast growth and development; 3) its effect on other hormones that stimulate breast cell division, and 4) its support of the growth of estrogen-responsive tumors".
Although these frightening possibilities have not been substantiated, consumers are beginning to demand paraben-free products. Many of the items that have become available are also made of all-natural ingredients. These all-natural ingredients such as Cynergy TK, Coenzyme Q10, and Phytessence Wakame that can be found in moisturizers, have been clinically proven to moisturize your skin safely and effectively.
