Is Poor Sleep Killing You?

Did you know that you spend about 33 percent of your life sleeping

? While that may seem like you are giving up a lot of your time to sleeping, it is incredibly important to your overall health and well being. The body needs sleep. Sleep allows your body to go to work at healing the damage done from the day. It allows a reset of your body, including your mind. When you sleep, you are improving your health and when you do not, you could be adding risk factors for early death or complications to health. Often, it is more than just looking at that discount bed you have and also looking at other factors that could be affecting your quality of sleep.

Why Sleep Matters

Take a look at what happens to your body when you get poor quality sleep or not enough good sleep:

- Your body becomes more susceptible to illness including viruses and bacterial infections. Your immune system is weakened from the lack of rest.

- Poor sleep can lead to or further exasperate problems with sleep apnea, a condition in which you stop breathing numerous times per night. If you are a heavy snorer, chances are good you have this condition already.

- Long-term lack of sleep can lead to complications within the heart and circulatory system. Evidence suggests that those who have bad sleep habits have a higher risk of developing complications including heart disease, diabetes and cancers.

As you can see, it is time to get serious about your overall health. By improving the quality of sleep you get, chances are good you will see marked improvement in your overall health especially over time.

Tips to Improving Sleep

If you cannot stand your discount bedroom furniture, it may be time for an upgrade. Also, do not forget about the kid's bedroom furniture. Poor sleep quality for children is just as detrimental to their health. Besides the quality of your furniture, there a few other things you can do today to see improvements in your health.

- Ensure you are sleeping on a supportive, high quality mattress. Look for a memory foam mattress if possible. This will provide you with extra support and relief to your joints.

- Besides the best mattress, you have to actually use it. Most people need between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. Try to ensure you are going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day.

- Dress your bedroom for sleep. Remove the distractions from the space. Make it a retreat, too. For example, choose modern bedroom furniture with quality bedding. Use candles in the space. This helps you to relax.

All of these factors play a role in the quality of sleep you get. Keep in mind the importance of having a firm but comfortable mattress, as that discount mattress may be keeping you up at night and that could be leading to complications to your health. The good news is that many of these problems can be reversed with improvements to your sleep.
