Is Switching Careers A Good Choice?

People deciding to switch careers is not uncommon and executive search firms come across people like this regularly

. There was a time where you chose your profession and stuck with it until retirement and many people still follow that path. But there are also people who decided it's time for something new and gave up their first choice. For some, it's either exploring a new skill or moving to a new country while others move their skills to a new sector.

Is it possible to convince an executive search agency that switching careers is for the best. What can you do to demonstrate that your abilities haven't been lost?

It's a brave move to switch careers. Things that could be affected are your income, working hours, and even the place you live. People have different opinions about this and this decision is not taken lightly. If you travel or study, you should be prepared to take the experience you'll have from your career break and turn it into something positive for your company.

If you have switched careers or taken a break and want to sign on with an executive search firm, then it's a good idea to make an appointment to go and see them. You will then get the chance to tell the consultant why you're suddenly changing from medicine to law and why you took a year out. You should be able to use your experience to let them know why you would be valuable in a senior position in a company.

For example, if you spent your time volunteering for a charity and working in Africa, you will have gained better communication and diplomacy skills than most people. You can also tell them how you managed to get people in your building project to work together as a team and how you managed the project. Whilst sorting out a problem business area isn't the same as building a school, the things you learned from your project can be applied in any situation.

The things you've learned that could benefit their clients is what executive search firms are interested in knowing. It could be that your career switch gives the client exactly what they're looking for. Turning your experiences into positives will help you win your next job.
