Is The Air In Your Home Toxic?

Truth be told, there are a great number of toxic chemicals used in the modern chemical

industry that are an essential part of the common household products that we all use. Exposure to these chemicals is something that, as consumers of a modern society, we simply cannot eliminate entirely. Some exposure is inevitable, regardless of what steps you take. Don't believe me? Well guess what, if you take showers you may be breathing Vinyl Chloride out-gassing from your shower curtain. If you live in a house that has been painted you may be breathing VOCs as the paint dries. If you fuel up your car or do a whole host of other activities we all so on a daily basis, you have free radicals floating your bloodstream as you are reading this. The really bad thing about free radicals such as the aromatic compounds prevalent in gasoline is that they can get caught up in the double helix of your DNA and cause copying errors or mutations.

There are three main routes of exposure for free radicals to enter into your bloodstream. Direct contact and absorption into your skin through touching, oral ingestion usually from eating or drinking and inhalation which is the fastest way into the bloodstream.

Absorption can usually easily be prevented by wearing gloves of the required material when handling liquids. For example, if you are handling hydrophilic chemicals such as household cleaners used for cleaning and disinfecting, latex gloves will probably be your best option, but if you are using organophilic solvents and cleaners such as gasoline or mineral spirits, latex gloves are not enough. Nitrile gloves would be needed in this case and in some cases you would need to double-up or put on two pair.

Ingestion can easily be prevented by drinking only liguids with water that has been purified by reverse osmosis. Additionally, it would be wise to closely monitor what additives are in your favorite drinks and flavor packets that you add to your water to flavor it. Another thing to look out for is the material used to hold what you are drinking. Is it plastic? Plastic can easily leach components into your water over time. Glass would be a better option.

Respiration is the most common route of exposure. As mentioned before, gasoline fumes are extremely toxic as they contain very high levels of aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes and others. The best way to avoid the fumes and the introduction of VOCs and free radicals into your bloodstream is to wear a respirator designed to purify the air you are breathing. However, chemical respirators are not comfortable and burdensome to wear so they are really not an option for use in the home. To find out the best option, check out our recommended air purifiers in the resource box below.
