Is The Deployment Of Enterprise Apps Really Affected By Security Of Mobile Devices?

The use of iPhones and iPads is very common in an enterprise

. With organizations around the world introducing the BYOD (Bring Your Own device) concept at the workplace, most employees have swapped the desktop with mobile devices to be able to work even while on the go.

However, deployment of apps in an enterprise depends directly on the security of these mobile devices. Be it a large or small scale enterprise, each has a clear hierarchy of workers. The documents shared by people at the managerial or executive level should not be accessible to workers at a junior level. However, resources and funds often get hacked due to the lack of security of tablet devices and mobile phones used in an enterprise.

Whether an enterprise uses an iPad, iPhone or a BlackBerry, there is always the possibility that these ubiquitous devices become vulnerable targets of nefarious attackers within the enterprise or amongst its competitors. Does this mean that no enterprise app should be deployed, keeping in mind the security issues of electronic mobile devices? The answer is definitely in the negative; an enterprise should rather identify, keep in mind, and then find solutions to the vast array of risks plaguing its work progress as a result of the use of mobile devices.

Let us first take a look at the primary risks imposed by mobile devices in an enterprise:

1. Lack of a consistent patch management system within the enterprise and no firmware updates

2. Distributed system of data access and storage mechanisms within the enterprise and with its competitors

3. A possibility of loss or theft of stored data or the mobile device itself

4. Improper mobile codes that encourage data leakage, malware, exposing of critical secrets of the enterprise, and access to intellectual property of the enterprise

5. Sometimes the enterprise does not appoint people adept with skills to manage the security settings of tablet and mobile phone deployments

Once the security threats have been identified by an enterprise, it is time to set the security standards to ensure that work mobility is not hampered. This can be done by following the below mentioned steps:

1. Trained personnel must be put in charge of assessing, deploying, and securing of tablets & other mobile devices within the enterprise

2. Penetration testers must be deployed in the enterprise to detect all threats in the first level

3. System and network administrators must be installed in the tablets & mobile devices used by the employees within the enterprise

4. Auditors must be employed by the enterprise authorities to set up technical skills, which will nullify the security threats

5. Ethical hackers must be recruited as an essential part of the workforce of an enterprise

6. The encryption system of the mobile devices used in the enterprise must be reviewed before use

PCs and laptops are fast becoming legacy electronic equipment as they are being replaced with tablets and mobile phones. If an enterprise does not ensure proper security standards of mobile devices while deploying the apps, there is a possibility that the mobility of the enterprise will be hampered.
