Is The Future Of E-commerce - 3d Photography?

3D Photography and e-Commerce go together like Strawberries and Cream

, Jack and Jill or Freedom and Whisky as Burns once said.

Some may challenge this assertion and they may well be right to. The addition of moveable or interactive photography, be that 3d or 360 photography for products online is with us already, but its not exactly widespread. The question is, will the two continue to grow together and become synonymous or will flat imaging with multiple product views win out?

As technology progresses the public appetite for more sophisticated and interactive website content grows. 37 million people currently shop online in the UK, growing by 16% per annum, despite the recession (IMRG). It is clear that they want great content and improved accessibility. Essentially an online mirror image of what shoppers expect to find on the high street and with online retail growing 6 times faster than high street sales, (Digital Strategy Consultancy, April 2011), its vital online retailers get it right.

In these times of recession where peoples spending power is being hit, the online purchase of a pair of shoes or new leather bag will more often than not be a carefully considered decision. Almost 10% of all retail purchases currently occur online, (Digital Strategy Consultancy, August 2011) and the websites providing clear and accurate information, with attractive design and great images at the right price, will inevitably attract the discerning online shopper. Research shows that those sites offering these attributes will continue to prosper by attracting new customers and retaining the ones they already have.

Arcadia fashion group, (Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Top Shop) recently declared a 38% downturn in profits. Sir Philip Green the group owner announced possible store closures with more focus online. The reason; a 27% year on year increase in online sales.

3D Photography can only enrich the recipe and contribute hugely to the improved levels of satisfaction and enhanced user experience. Lets look at some online shopping areas that may benefit from the addition of 3D Photography.

SHOES

The ability to view a shoe from any angle, have a look at the upper, the sole, the design and stitching must improve the customer experience and increase the chance of an online sale. This will be true for fashion shoes, designer boots and walking boots and will be attractive to both men and women alike.

ELECTRICAL GOODS

If you cant have that drill or coffee maker in your hands what better way to make an informed decision online than to play with it and move it about on your home computer, laptop, smartphone or iPhone via 3D Photography. You can pick up on features, get a feel for quality and generally have fun shopping. Sales of electrical goods online are increasing by 13% year on year, (IMRG).

CLOTHES (Fashion and Sports)

3d Photography could well be the key to increasing clothes shopping online, especially for women who are very clear that they would buy more clothes online if the experience is more interactive and accessible. Sales of clothes are increasing by 32% year on year, (IMRG).

FOOD and DRINK

Would seeing various food and drink items in 3D Photography make things easier when doing this type of shopping from home? Is it gimmicky or is it more than that. Perhaps a change that will come naturally and inevitably to all of us who use the internet for our consumer needs. Sales of alcohol are increasing by 23% year on year, (IMRG).

Other areas for consideration; toys and gadgets, artefacts, antiques, sports equipment, DIY, engineering/manufacturing parts and machinery, the list goes on and on. In fact the natural conclusion is that its applicable right across the board.

With some excellent 3D Photography and 360 services available, we should all enjoy improved website photography in the very near future.
