Is The Internet A Viable Medium For Home Communications?
Theres no doubt that as we move further forward into the 21st century the title of the digital age is one that rings ever truer
. Technological advances are happening at a rate never seen before, and the innovations that are being built into new products are quickly having a significant impact on many aspects of our daily lives. Digital mediums have already revolutionised the way that we do business and socialise with friends and family, they have even begun to effect the psychological development of children from younger generations. Among these innovations probably the most powerful tool that has come about is the Internet.
In the past decade or two it seems that many businesses and manufacturers are beginning to realise the potential that lies with the Internet as a medium for communication, it is extremely effective and also economical, it is rare that you ever find those two terms describing one thing. Already people are using the Internet to communicate in a number of different ways, including through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, email, and video calls made through Skype. Telephone companies are also getting on board with the digital revolution and are now developing packages that allow people to communicate via the Internet. VoIP phones enable the user to make calls through the Internet whilst still operating the same way that a traditional phone does.
The implications for VoIP phones are quite significant as they allow the user to make long distance or even international calls at little or no extra cost, furthermore they still appeal to those older generations who dislike using new technology as VoIP phones function in the same way as a regular phone. While the advantages of having a VoIP phone are quite clear many people tend to overlook the potential problems that could come with them, for instance a household that doesnt have a strong Internet connection might find that the quality of the calls is not matched by a regular home phone. Furthermore by only having a VoIP phone you are committed entirely to your Internet connection when it comes to communicating, should your connection go down you will not be able to make or receive any calls.
Security presents another issue with relying on your Internet connection for your communication needs. Much like mobile phones, which carry with the risk of being hacked, the Internet does not provide a great amount of security, so if you were to disclose any personal information you may be putting yourself at risk of fraud. In particular smartphones that use cellular networks are noted as being a high-risk category. In conclusion despite the potential that lies with the Internet for communicating there are still some underlying issues.
