Time after time, when learning about Internet Marketing
, you will come across people who tell you that finding a starving market is key to a successful business. The analogy being that it's easy to sell food to a crowd of hungry people. And the hungrier they are, the easier it gets.
There is some truth in this, but and it's a big but, with the amount of freely available information out on the internet, your potential customer is rarely starving!
So a better strategy for successfully marketing on-line, is to get inside the mind set of your potential customer. Think about what they want to achieve and the problems and challenges they may face. Then become the go to person for providing the help and advice they need to overcome the obstacles to successfully reaching their goal. And show them how your information will help them achieve what they are looking for quicker and easier than doing it alone.
This may mean being much more specific with the way you market your product. For example when I was training my dog I was much more likely to buy from a site that addressed the specific issues I had, rather than one that gave me general training advice. Particularly if they built a relationship with me first by providing me with good quality, relevant information.
So rather than find a large market (like dog owners) and thinking this will be your ticket to success, keep narrowing it down into sub groups and then find out what people within each niche want to achieve, and the problems they are facing. Then build your offer around specifically helping this smaller group of people.
A good way to really focus your marketing is to build a profile of your ideal customer. Are they male or female, how old are they, are they married or single, and do they have a family? Once you have profiled your customer then give that customer a name and market as if you are selling to this specific person. It's a lot easier to write as if you are talking to one person than the masses, and this will help to add the personal touch that's missing from a lot of on-line marketing.
Also don't be afraid to be yourself and let your own personality shine through. People tend to buy from people they like (or are like them!) so be true to yourself and you will connect with like-minded people. You are never going to please all the people, all the time, so don't even try!
Once you have built your relationship with your customer, then you can expand your market by offering them products and services that are related and may also be of interest to them. That way you can build a profitable business without the need for a huge customer list.
