Is The Threat Of Nuclear Terrorism Real?

In a word yes it is

In a word yes it is. I believe that if terrorists had nukes they would have used them a long time ago. The US has used technology to place a stranglehold on terrorist activities. We have used drones to decimate the leadership ranks of al-Qaeda in Pakistan to the point that it seems that they cant launch a successful attack.

The major obstacle to nuclear terrorism is that terrorists have not been able to obtain a nuclear weapon. A single terrorist armed with a nuclear device could do a massive amount of damage and change the political atmosphere of the entire world. Logistically this is easier to do in modern days than ever. Lines of transportation and communication are so sophisticated that transporting such a device t a target area is not that difficult at all. The United States and every other country have a gigantic task of securing its borders against terrorism.

A single nuclear weapon in the hands of a well-funded, technically able, and properly motivated individual could result in upwards of millions of deaths. The act that started World War I, the assassination of the Archduke was committed by the Black Hand, which was sponsored by Serbia. The gunman, Gavrilo Princip, was captured. Serbia was destroyed in retribution. While the assassination was successful, the consequences greatly outweighed the benefits. Traditional terrorist organizations have just not been able to put all of the necessary pieces together to pull off a surprise nuclear attack but you can bet that they are trying everything possible.

Another effect from a September 11th size attack is that victims would not be guaranteed to be from the target group. Much of the damage would be collateral damage, which means that many unintended people would be killed. This probably wouldnt bother groups like al-Qaeda because most times they seem to want the shock of killing for the sake of effect regardless of who the victims are. Al Qaeda has an inexhaustible supply of soldiers. These soldiers come from various countries including those allied to the United States such as Saudi Arabia. This denies the United States an easy target for retribution. Like the average Al Qaeda terrorist, the organizations leadership could easily be replaced. They do seem to be running out of willing martyrs because they have resorted to kidnapping and using children to carry their suicide bombs into battle.

I believe that al-Qaeda would not hesitate at all to use a nuclear device if they had all of the pieces of the puzzle in place. Their biggest hindrance has been US technology and intelligence. The US has begun an initiative to find and account for all of the nuclear material in the world. Personally I feel that this is just a little too ambitious to work but it is necessary. If there were to be a nuclear disaster I guarantee that our government would be criticized no matter what actions that they have taken.

The biggest problem now is the fact that the Iranians are seeking to produce nuclear weapons and they wont hesitate to use them once they are produced. There is the proposition of a preemptive attack on Iran by the US and/or Israel but such an attack could have dire consequences. We have to maintain this as a viable option. It also seems that we may have to use this option because the Iranians wont be dissuaded from producing nuclear weapons and they have vowed to use them when they get them.Military Ring Express
