Is There A Quick Way To Learn Medical Transcription?

When you're considering learning medical transcription

, the amount of time the courses take to be completed may be a bit daunting. You may be looking at courses that claim to teach you in eight weeks rather than the 6-9 months or more of other programs and wonder if you can just learn it the quick way.

I wouldn't recommend that. You cannot learn enough of what a successful medical transcriptionist needs to know in so short a time period. There's too much to learn.

Start with medical prefixes and suffixes to help you understand unfamiliar vocabulary without having to look it up. Then learn anatomy, physiology, disease processes and pharmacology. Next learn the grammar and styles necessary to a transcriptionist. Follow it all up with many hours of real doctor dictation.

That's a lot to fit into eight weeks. You aren't going to learn it well if you try to fit it into so short a time period. You certainly aren't going to get enough transcription practice, and that's one of the most important things you need to master if you're going to earn your living in this career.

You can try to go fast, but you are far more likely to waste those weeks of time learning too little to get a job, and lose the money you paid for classes. Speed and accuracy are vital as a medical transcriptionist. You won't learn either of those if you rush through your education.

No matter how badly you want or need to get your career started quickly, shortchanging your education for that career isn't the way to do it. This is especially true in a field such as medical transcription, where your pay is often based on production. If you don't really know what you're doing, you aren't going to earn much no matter how fast you got through school.

You're better off looking at what a course has to offer you than at how fast you can get through it. If you want to go faster, go for a self paced program. It will probably still take you more than eight weeks or so to get through it, but at least you'll be learning at your own speed.

Make sure any course you take is AHDI Approved. They check schools to be sure that they're offering training that will build the skills a successful transcriptionist needs.

There's a good balance between getting through a course fast so you can start working and in going so fast that you aren't qualified for the career. A self paced program can help you to balance those factors so that the time it takes to really learn the skills you need depends on you.
