Is There A True Cure For Hpv?

Unfortunately there is currently no cure for warts which are caused by the Human Papillomavirus

. There are ways to help prevent the spread of HPV including using safe sex and having both you and your partner tested. While there are currently no cures for HPV, there are a great many treatments for the symptoms. Which treatment will work best for you is determined by a doctor based on both the location and the size of the warts on your body. If you suspect you have genital warts you should inform your partner immediately so that you both can be tested by your doctors.

Some of the more common creams or gels for treating genital warts are Condylox, Wartec, and Warticon, which contain varying levels of podophyllotoxin. These creams and gels are often the first thing a doctor recommends due to their price. Also currently on the market is Sinecatechins (an ointment made from green tea extract) and Imiquimod (Aldara). You should not use any of these creams or gels if you are currently pregnant as they can cause birth defects.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was once prescribed for this condition but has been removed from the market due to the side effects. There are other forms of treatment which are more invasive including laser ablation and Electro cauterization, both of these treatments are performed by a surgeon and are considerably more expensive then creams or gels. Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery is one of the only treatments available for pregnant women, and it is effective between 70-79% of the time however the reoccurrence rate is a bit higher then other methods.

None of these treatments are full proof and unfortunately it is common for genital warts to reappear after going through any of these treatments. These treatments can also cause scarring and depigmentation resulting in the skin where the wart was being discolored. All of these treatments require the consultation of a doctor and the gels and creams are only available with a prescription.

In some cases (10-20%) genital warts will disappear on their own permanently but it is not currently known why that is. If you are one of the cases whose warts have disappeared you should still use extreme caution in sexual relations because the Human Papillomavirus can still be passed on, even when your genital warts have disappeared.

There are various way to prevent infection of HPV. Gardasil has been approved by the FDA to prevent the HP Virus and is approved for use by young woman preferably before their first sexual experience. It is also being tested for young men and is available in both the US and UK for men.

Hopefully with advances is medical technology we will one day be able to find a fool proof cure for dealing with genital warts. In the mean time it is best to seek advice from your doctor as to which method of treatment is best for you.
