Is There Help for People with Hypochondria?

Is there really a cure for hypochondria? After all

, if hypochondria is the constant fear of being afflicted by imaginary ailments, does it not also mean that hypochondria itself is just an imaginary disease? The fact of the matter is hypochondriacs can't control their anxieties. Even frequent reassurance from different doctors, constant reminding that there isn't actually anything wrong with them will do little to ease their stress.

Hypochondriacs are people who have convinced themselves that they are suffering from a sickness, even though there are only the slightest of symptoms they believe that they are already sick. Oftentimes the hypochondriac will be convinced that he or she has a particularly serious ailment like cancer or AIDS immediately after reading about it. Researching ailments is something that hypochondriacs are fond of doing. And other times the sickness they complain about may be very vague, like "weak nerves" or a "worn-out gall bladder." Hypochondriacs are incessant complainers; no amount of convincing can persuade them to believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.

Unfortunately, even though the illnesses the hypochondriacs believe they have are entirely imaginary, the effects these "illnesses" have a very real effect on their lives. There is a psychosomatic effect when the sufferer believes that what he feels is real. The mind will force the body to feel what it believes it should be feeling. If the hypochondriac believes that his body is very weak, even on death's door, all too often this will definitely happen to them. The real illnesses that can be brought about by hypochondria are obesity, anemia, depression, and even a weakened immune system.

Hypochondriacs cannot be simply told that there is nothing wrong with their bodies, that it's all in their head. It's highly unethical for doctors to tell them that and just simply dismiss them and leave them to suffer from their imagined maladies. It's not their fault that they are morbidly obsessed with everything happening in their bodies, it's like saying someone with arachnophobia are stupid because they are afraid of such a small creature. They did not choose to become like that, they have a serious medical condition, which if not treated immediately will complicate matters even more. Fortunately there is help for the hypochondriacs; using powerful techniques, they can be helped to alleviate their condition, and just maybe eradicate their anxieties completely.

Hypochondria is a mental disturbance in which a person is plagued by recurring, self-destructive, and obsessive thoughts; in this case thoughts about serious physical maladies. Therapists can use Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP to "talk" hypochondriacs out of their obsessive thought patterns. NLP is a form of ultra-effective communication skill that very skilled therapists can effectively use. With the help of NLP therapists the hypochondriac can learn to isolate self-destructive thoughts like "I'm very sick" or "I'm in an enormous amount of pain" and recondition the mind to think only of positive things. If the mind believes it's healthy, the body will follow suit.

So if you or someone you know suffers from hypochondria the best doctor to consult are not medical doctors but psychologists.
