These free versions are solely limited in features, usually only having the very basics to perhaps start a website, depending on what the site will encompass. On some sites, you are given a free domain name and free web hosting; however, you cannot choose the domain name unless you purchase one and you will need to either use a free email account or again, purchase a domain name in order to use email accounts with your domain name.

Other free web hosting sites only offer a certain amount of space that you are able to use, only offering 20MB for all your files and documents that will used for your site. That doesn't give much room for you to expand the website or to add more robust features. Also, you are not able to utilize your own choice of website design programs; many of these sites only allow you to use their own creation program.

There is also the consideration of what your website will entail. Most personal websites will benefit more from using a free web host than that of a small or corporate business. This is because for personal websites, they are a reflection of the designer, perhaps showcasing a world trip or a child's graduation or special ceremony. If you only have a small amount of material for your site, a free one with free hosting works well.

Certainly if you plan on launching a business website or a professional website, you should definitely consider going with a paid version of web hosting. There are of course several companies that offer paid hosting. Paid hosting offers a lot more in variety and customization than that of a free host. One benefit is the ability to choose your own domain name (as long as it is not already taken). Most hosting sites will provide the means in which to choose and pay for a domain name, they may even offer that as part of their services, so you don't have to pay two separate entities.

Another benefit is the ability to choose how much space you will need. 5GB is usually this is the cheaper option, with the ability to go up to at least a terabyte of space for all your files, documents, and any media you plan on placing on the site itself.

The decision of free hosting vs. paid hosting is dependent on what your site is about or will about. Is there such a thing as free hosting? Yes, if your website will only have the very bare minimums that follow the style and content that the free host is offering, in regards to size, features, backups, or customization. If your website is small or you are just starting a website, a free hosting site is beneficial in that you can save the money for other things.
