Using a 1 sunless tanning lotion or spray is ideal if you want to keep the tan on for a week at the most.

* Pills: Pills for tanning contain the pigment called canthaxanthin. Canthaxanthin once consumed, gets deposited in the entire body, which includes the skin. The skin in turn changes in color to orange-brown. Internal organs like the liver and brain too change in color.

* Accelerators: Most tanning accelerators come in the form of pills or lotions that comprise amino acid tyrosine. Producers of this product vouch that tyrosine stimulates and increases the formation of melanin, which in turn accelerates the process of tanning naturally.

Risks of Using Sunless Tanning Methods

There are many risks using a sunless tanning product. They are:

* No sunscreen: Most of the sunless tanning items do not have a sunscreen to protect one from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. For protection from the sun a tanner should contain SPF. The ingredients to be present are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and avobenzone.

* Danger of Canthaxanthin: Pills that contain canthaxanthin have hazardous side-effects. The liver gets inflamed (hepatitis) and yellow deposits are formed in the retina of the eye (canthaxanthin retinopathy).
